The final stage - feeling happy to spell independently

I teach this technique to children aged 6 through to adults.  As a sequel to the above activities to learn 'ai' spellings, this final technique confirms a long-term knowledge of the spelling group.  This advanced technique involves writing some simple sentences which are evidence of the dyslexic or dyspraxic's growth in confidence in using these spellings.  This technique also helps to strengthen auditory sequential memory which is usually a relative weakness in dyslexia and dyspraxia.

The next step: to increase confidence in writing further

I teach this technique to children aged 6 through to adults.  This technique requires the student's 'ai' Picture Poster (above).  It is designed to build confidence in writing the group of 'ai' spellings from memory with automaticity, without having to stop to think too hard.  This technique is an important preliminary to Dictation (below).

To follow Card 'ai' (above) - a confidence-building written exercise

I teach this exercise to children aged 6 through to adults.  It is designed to be used soon after the above two techniques (Picture Poster, and, Card 'ai') have been completed. This exercise asks the student to write in the letters representing the missing sound in a small selection of words.  It makes the jump from working with the sounds orally, to writing the spellings, in an easy step.  This exercise is a gentle precursor to the more advanced technique Speed Spelling (below).

Essential practice in memorising the sound 'ai' using tactile methods

I teach this technique to children aged 6 through to adults.  It assumes a prior knowledge of the alphabet letter sounds, P, R, A and I, which we revise if necessary using a Sounds Poster.  It is designed to be used before the technique Writing 'ai' (below).  The tactile technique Card 'ai' engages the dyslexic or dyspraxic in sound analysis and blending using the vowel digraph (or, vowel pair) 'ai'.  No writing is required.  The technique focuses on making the leap in understanding from single vowel sounds, like 'a' and 'i' standing alone, to the completely new sound made by vowels standing together as a pair.  In this sense, this technique is a fundamental help in overcoming one of the biggest problems for the dyslexic or dyspraxic: the vowel digraph.

A fun technique to learn words which contain the spelling '-ai-' 

I teach this technique to children aged 6 through to adults.  As the title suggests, this technique is a pictorial one - in fact there is no writing involved. 
The technique uses the dyslexic and dyspraxic's innate skills in holistic visual memory to learn a set of words which have in common the spelling pattern, 'ai'. 
This is an essential preliminary technique in the learning of the spelling 'ai',
and it works very well as a precursor to the technique, Card 'ai' (below).
